Phoenix Attorneys for Victims Medical Malpractice Involving Angina

Angina is chest pain or discomfort which is caused by ischemic heart disease.  This means a part of the heart muscle does not receive enough oxygen, usually because that part of the heart is not receiving enough oxygen rich blood.  Angina occurs most commonly as a result of plaque build up on the inner walls of the coronary arteries which carry blood to the heart.  The plaque narrows the arteries reducing blood flow, ultimately causing chest pain.  Angina can also be caused by coronary microvascular disease which damages arteries in the heart that are much smaller than the coronary arteries.

Common types of Angina

Angina is usually described as either stable or unstable.  Stable angina is predictable in its frequency, its severity, and the events which trigger it.  Patients are generally able to determine when pain will occur based on the pattern.  Stable angina is generally treated with rest and medication.

Unstable angina has many different presentations and does not follow a pattern.  Its triggers are not predictable and its frequency and severity are variable.  It may be new onset angina or it may be a worsening of previously stable angina.  Rest or medication may not relieve unstable angina.  This is a serious condition for which medical treatment should be sought immediately.  Chest pain can be caused by a variety of conditions besides heart disease including infection, arterial tears, blood clots and inflammation of the tissue surrounding the heart.  A prompt diagnosis of new onset chest pain or changing chest pain is critical to rule out any emergent, life threatening condition.
