Placental Abruption

Arizona Medical Negligence Attorneys for Victims of Placental Abruption

The placenta is the organ which connects the developing baby to the wall of the mother’s uterus. Through the placenta and the attached umbilical cord the baby receives oxygen and nutrients and disposes of waste.

On rare occasions, the placenta will separate from the uterus.  This is called an abruption.  It can be the result of a fall or other trauma, such as an automobile accident, maternal high blood pressure, or an abnormally short umbilical cord.  Sometimes there is no clear reason for the abruption.  A placental abruption may be small or large.  As the placenta separates from the wall of the uterus, the uterus will begin to bleed. The bleeding may become catastrophic.  Additionally, the more it separates from the wall, the less oxygen the baby receives

Pregnant Women Need Immediate Medical Attention after Any Accident

A placental abruption is a medical emergency which requires immediate attention.  Even when prompt medical attention is sought after an accident, a placental abruption may not be recognized until it is too late.  Misdiagnosis of a placental abruption may result in death or serious injury to the baby and, on some occasions, death of the mother as well.
