Pneumothorax and Hemothorax

Arizona Lawyers for Victims of Medical Malpractice Involving Pneumothorax or Hemothorax

In the blink of an eye, an accident can cause life-threatening injuries.  When this happens, prompt medical attention is critical and patients depend on trained professionals to take effective action.  But this does not always occur.  Pneumothorax and hemothorax are two commonly misdiagnosed and mistreated traumatic injuries.

Pneumothorax

Pneumothorax occurs when air enters the pleural cavity, the space between the lungs and chest wall.  It is often referred to as a collapsed or partially collapsed lung.  It may occur as a result of physical trauma to the chest, blast injury or even as a complication of medical treatment.  It occupies space that would normally be occupied by the lung and thereby prevents the lung from fully expanding.  This in turn may prevent the patient from receiving adequate oxygen.

Hemothorax

Hemothorax occurs when blood accumulates in the pleural cavity. It is usually caused by blunt or penetrating traumatic injury to the chest which results in damage to the arteries or veins of the chest.  If left untreated, the condition can progress to a point where the accumulated blood causes enough pressure on the lungs to prevent proper function.  Alternatively, the patient lose so much blood into the chest cavity that they bleed to death.
