Most states have rules which require hospitals to report cases where a patient is harmed by medical negligence.  Unfortunatley, many hospitals are ignoring the rules according to a report by the Depart of Health and Human Services inspector general.  Doing so means they can evade blame for errors which may significantly affect a patient’s health.  Close to  30% of Medicare patients are harmed in some way by the care they receive.  That’s staggering and the of those preventable errors is cost is an even more staggering $4 billion dollars a year.   Makes you wonder whether the cure might be worse than the disease.  While researchers say the hospital’s reporting failures are the result of staff ignorance rather than something more sinister, that’s tough to swallow.  When the hospital can evade malpractice liability by failing to properly train employees you have to wonder how much effort is being spent to educate employees in the first place.
