I was recently browsing the web when I found this piece on five questions you should ask before surgery. This is a helpful article which highlights the importance of being an informed patient. As I have pointed out often in the past, medicine today is a business and we patients are its customers. Surgery is something which is being sold to us which brings up the first and most important question suggested by the author, “Do I need this surgery?”

Once you answer that question affirmatively, the next most important question is “What is the experience of the hospital with my surgery?” Surgeons choose the hospitals at which they will perform surgery. Sometimes the choice is based on nothing more than proximity to the surgeon’s office. What is most convenient for the surgeon may not be the best choice for you. Hospitals must report certain data to the federal government and that data is used to rate hospitals. Here is a link to the rankings by Medicare. There are other rating services available on the internet.

Perhaps even more important that the experience of the hospital with your surgery is the experience of your surgeon. You should ask your surgeon about his or her experience with the surgery and their patient outcomes. Any surgeon who objects to such questions is probably not someone you want operating on you. You want a surgeon who does your procedure often and who gets good outcomes for his or her patients. You should check your surgeon’s record with your local medical board. Often you can find some information about patient satisfaction with a particular surgeon on the internet.

The article mentions some other questions but the ones above are the most important. As always, ask questions and be an informed consumer. Surgery, no matter how trivial, is too important to be left to chance.
