A doctor putting money in his pocket

It is no secret that there is a curtain of silence maintained by doctors and hospitals about the mistakes they make.  They don’t admit to mistakes.  When they get caught and have to settle malpractice claims, they continue to deny that they made a mistake, even when they are paying large sums of money to make up for that mistake.  To top it off, they then insist that the terms of the settlement be secret.  No one can know that they made a mistake and agreed to pay money for it.  Patients are hurt, not just by the original malpractice, but also by the fact that when mistakes are never admitted, there is no way to study them or learn from them.  Furthermore, bad doctors and the hospitals who enable them to practice in their facilities are allowed to go on as before.

From time to time we get a peek behind the curtain.  I recently came upon a web site written anonymously by a doctor who is embarrassed and disgusted by what he sees going on around him.  It is an understatement to say that he is angry at what he sees.  He is livid.  He is angry that some of the doctors he sees are in it for the money and patients are just the way he or she gets the money.  He points out the obvious: you really don’t want these people taking care of you and telling you whether you need surgery by them or not.  In the course of my practice, I see a lot of bad things going on in the medical profession but I don’t think it is as bad as this doctor thinks it is.  I hope I am right.

The criticism of money grubbing is not true of most doctors.  Most doctors are caring people who are trying to do the right thing.  Unfortunately, without more information there is no way to tell into which category a doctor falls and neither doctors nor hospitals are in any hurry to get you that information.
