Many health care professionals rail against patients who make claims when they have been the victims of medical malpractice.  “These claims are driving up the cost of medical care,” they say.  “These claims are bankrupting the system,” they say.  These statements are not true, of course, and the people who have been horribly damaged by doctor negligence deserve what little they receive as they try to go on with their lives.  What is true, however, is that there is a proven and grave threat to the cost of health care and to the financial solvency of our health care system: it is the doctors and their helpers who defraud the health care system of billions of dollars every year.   That is billions with a B.

Go ahead and Google “doctor fraud” and the hits will just keep on coming.  In Charleston, South Carolina, doctors, nurses and other health care professionals and their accomplices are arrested for stealing $712,000,000 from Medicare.  A doctor in Los Angeles prescribes thousands of unneeded and often never delivered power chairs and steals $23,000,000 from Medicare.  A doctor in Dallas was convicted last month in a home health care scam that defrauded the rest of us of nearly $400,000,000.  A family practice group out of South Carolina must be embarrassed to be charged with stealing only $9,000,000.  Southern California doctors are convicted of stealing over $8,000,000.  A New Jersey doctor was found to have submitted $52,000,000 in false claims.  And these are just the ones who get caught.  We must not be naive enough to assume that we have uncovered all the doctors and other health care professionals who are stealing from us.

If there ever comes a day when the medical profession cleans its own house of the incompetent, uncaring doctors who get sued for malpractice over and over and over, if there ever comes a day when the medical profession cleans its own house of the fraudsters who steal from all of us, on that day the medical profession may complain about the cost of medical malpractice claims but not one day sooner.
